Overview of FTI Programs

“Fambul Tok offers a national platform for mobilizing, growing and strengthening community-owned and led peacebuilding and development. We develop and support inclusive governance structures to sustain that community-centered work. Our work is unique in bridging local community, local government and national policy. Our field experience ultimately led to changing our focus from reconciliation to community-centered development and it informs the work we are doing now in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

  • The heart of our programming today is the People’s Planning Process (PPP), through which we organize local communities to plan and lead their own development. After the Ebola outbreak of 2014-2015, Fambul Tok adapted its community-mobilization approach to facilitate post-Ebola people’s led planning and development. The work is connected to local governance structures through Inclusive District Committees (IDC), which have become a vehicle for strengthening district leadership in our operational districts. Core to the PPP is facilitating a network of inclusive governance structures at the village, section, chiefdom and district levels.
  • We have worked with the Sierra Leone government to translate and adapt the PPP for national rollout through the Wan Fambul National Framework for Inclusive Governance and Local Development (WFNF), and we continue to play a leading role in working for its implementation. The Framework is designed to bring local government devolution to the next level by linking it to the Medium-Term National Development Plan (2019-2023), thus bringing development to the doorstep of people particularly in the rural areas of the country. The framework provides a channel for addressing conflicts, building community resilience, and getting communities to collectively work for their own development in a manner that facilitates their full participation and respects the views and contributions of all.
  • Strengthening women’s leadership is at the core of all our work and the Peace Mothers Platform has become the powerful engine for community rebirth. This platform comprises rural women who are poor and vulnerable, some of them severely affected by past conflicts, the Ebola outbreak, etc. This initiative draws from our proven approach that strengthens community women’s capabilities in identifying conflict early warnings and continues to build on their core competencies in mediating local community disputes and enhancing healing and sustainable peace in their communities.
  • Fambul Tok International was established to facilitate community healing, reconciliation and putting local people and communities at the centre of their own peace and development. The organization has a 10-year experience in post-war reconciliation and the community healing process we pioneered in that work still grounds and informs everything we do today. We adapted the principles from that work to a focused Ebola response, which you can learn about here. We continue to facilitate Community Healing and Reconciliation in our operational areas
